The Chirping at the Volcano
Early in the morning, I set off in a rowing boat. The water is calm, accompanied only by the gentle lapping of the waves. Sultan Sazlığı Milli Park is one of Turkey's most important wetlands and feels like a little world of its own.
Amongst marshes, lakes and endless reed beds, I discover countless species of birds, many of them migratory birds on their long journey. Nature here is incredibly vibrant and calming at the same time. I am particularly impressed by the vastness of the landscape – and then this sight: in the distance, yet so close, rises the mighty Erciyes volcano, almost 4,000 metres high, lending the moment something magical. A place that makes you want to stay longer and explore further. | Turkey
A sleeping giant, with life quietly unfolding at its feet.
