The salty land by the sea

In the evening on the south coast of Lanzarote: Just outside the fishing village of El Golfo, there are the terraced salt marshes, the Salinas de Janubio, separated from the open sea by a headland.

In earlier times, windmills pumped the salty seawater into the upper basins of the multi-stage basin systems. Later, electric pumps took over this task. The water evaporates due to solar radiation and the remaining highly enriched water is directed into smaller basins. In the small basins the salt can crystallize and later be skimmed off. | Canaries
