Attention fish

The red flags in Barhöft harbour mostly belong to local fishermen. They are attached to long poles and stuck into the nets or fish traps that are laid out in the Bodden lagoon. Fluttering in the wind, they give the small harbour a distinctive look and remind us of the town's close connection to traditional coastal fishing.

Maritime tranquillity and idyllic nature come together in the small harbour of Barhöft. Nestled between reed beds and gentle waves, the harbour is a cosy port of call for sailors, motorboats and day trippers. From here, there is a sweeping view across the Strelasund to the island of Hiddensee. Walkers enjoy the fresh sea air while seagulls circle above the masts and fishing boats return from their catch. The harbour is not only a starting point for tours of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park, but also a place to pause and slow down – a piece of unspoilt coastal life.

  1. I wonder if the red color has any particular meaning, or if the flags could be in different colors?
Maybe each fisherman, or fishing family, uses flags of a specific color.
