Évora is located in the Alentejo, the historic center was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. It has about 57,000 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011) and is the capital of the district of the same name. It is also the seat of the Archdiocese of Évora and a state university. | Portugal
Some say that Évora was founded by the Eburones, ancient peoples who existed in the Iberian Peninsula, around 2059 BC under the name Ebura or Elbura. But even long before that, it was an inhabited area, as around Évora there are many Neolithic monuments. Among them is the Almendres Cromlech, known as the Portuguese Stonehenge.
