The discreet gate

In Brixham, where discretion is still considered an art of living, there is a door that does everything right – it is there, but please do not notice it. Behind it lies a property with a house, but the fence in front of it is so high that one might think a secret agent, a celebrity or simply someone with very little trust in their neighbours lives there.

The door itself seems like a silent compromise: ‘Of course you can come in – but only if no one is watching.’ Slightly crooked, slightly offended and with British reserve, it leans into the world as if to say: I'm not crooked, the world is.

So it remains standing, a symbol of the typically English balance between privacy and absurdity – a door that protects without explaining and opens without revealing what lies behind it. | England

  1. I really like how the strong, vertical lines of the wooden fence contrast with the rough, horizontal texture of the stone wall below it. The subtle design of the discreet gate, nestled into the fence, adds a great sense of mystery and character to the composition.

  2. Ansichtssache :
    Hanglage :
Wer mag es schon, wenn every Dick, Tom, and Harry von der Straße her und von oben herab ins Frühstücks-Porridge peeken ?
    ;-)
