The deep basin in the Mediterranean

The port of Port-Vendres is regarded as one of the most important natural harbours on the French Mediterranean coast. Located in the Occitanie region, not far from the Spanish border, it combines an economic role with a strategic location. Thanks to its sheltered bay and deep waters, Port-Vendres can accommodate even large vessels – an advantage that has always made the port attractive to both trade and the military.

As early as the 17th century, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban had the complex expanded and fortified. Today, the port is a bustling hub: alongside freight traffic, particularly for agricultural produce, fishing continues to play an important role. At the same time, tourism is growing in importance. Cruise ships and sailing yachts call regularly, bringing visitors to the small coastal town. | France
