On the road in the wadi and the rocky desert Shuwaymiyah.
The fascinating dry valley Shuwayamiah lies on the east coast of Oman in the south of the abandoned stone desert Jiddat al-Harasis. The region is located approximately three hundred kilometres from Salalah.
The impressive landscape is dominated by the rugged and spectacular rockfalls and the light sandstone. Steep, bright walls, overhanging cliffs and bizarrely shaped rock mountains lie along the route under the hot and glistening sun.
Those who have the patience to drive deep into the wadi will be surprised with a green and water rich oasis. At a rock edge water makes its way...
... and drips steadily into a dark turquoise-green pool. The continuous dripping has led to the formation of stalactites. In the following one finds other water basins, which disappear then in the further course in the dry rock desert.
Where the water in this dry area comes from, I could not find out. In any case, it seems to be available all year round, otherwise such a lush and green vegetation could not have developed.
If you are looking for a cooling down after the heat in the wadi, you can visit the nearby deserted beach and swim in the Indian Ocean.
