Rice is also a main food in Laos, where large rice fields can be found in the usually mountainous country, especially in the river valleys. For some years now, the Southeast Asian country has been able to feed its population with rice exclusively from its own cultivation.

Four fifths of the population grow a total of around 700,000 hectares of rice, about one fifth the size of Switzerland.
