A Jewel Under Pressure

Beyşehir Gölü, Turkey’s third-largest lake and the country’s biggest freshwater body, is a central Anatolian landscape icon—a brilliant blue patch surrounded by peaks rising over 2,000 metres. Still off the main tourist trails, it offers postcard-perfect scenery and a sense of almost meditative calm, complete with numerous islands and Seljuk ruins such as the Kubadabad Palace.

But beneath this idyllic surface, things are stirring. The lake, once renowned for its abundant fish and sheer size (45 km long, up to 10 m deep), is fighting for survival. The problem is the classic trifecta of human and natural forces: climate change bringing less rainfall, massive water abstraction for irrigating the Konya Plain, and—here's the critical bit—the discharge of wastewater.

For a long time, nature was treated as inexhaustible. Now, the region is forced to act quickly: wastewater treatment plants are being built and ambitious master plans for saving the lake are being drawn up. It’s a race against time. Whether this Turkish jewel can preserve its biodiversity and pristine nature depends on whether the conservation measures take hold fast enough—and whether people resist the temptation to continue taking this precious water for granted. Beyşehir Gölü serves as a stark reminder that the greatest treasures are often the most fragile. | Türkiye

  2. Beautiful moment, with that strip of light adding a lovely touch to the photo.
Let’s just hope they don’t let the lake dry up.
