Tree Ache

In a forest on Rügen a beech and a tree fungus share a trunk.

The tinder sponge is a mushroom species from the family of the wood fungus relatives. It attacks weakened deciduous trees, especially beech and birch trees, and forms thick, inverse consol-shaped fruiting bodies on the trunks. The perennial structures can reach a diameter of up to 30 cm.
