Yangon early in the morning, young novices collect their food alms: Of the approximately 53 million inhabitants, about 500,000 are currently practising monks. This means that about 0.94 percent of Myanmar's population are active as monks. A special feature in Myanmar is that not only boys and men practise as monks. Girls and women are also allowed to be taught as nuns or novices together with the monks.
In Myanmar, boys and men are expected to spend time in a monastery at least once in their lives. The monks' task is to lead an intellectual life according to over 200 Buddhist precepts. | Myanmar
