The life of the catfish
In the Qalay-i-Zal district in Kunduz province, several families make their living from fishing in the Kunduz River. The river is an important lifeline for the region: it not only provides water for agriculture and livestock farming, but also food and income from fishing. The fishermen mostly use simple boats and traditional nets to catch various freshwater fish, including carp and catfish species.
In recent years, however, fish stocks have declined due to drought, pollution and the construction of small dams. Nevertheless, fishing remains an important livelihood for many villagers and part of their cultural identity along the Kunduz River. | Afghanistan
