At an altitude of around 2,000 metres there is a plateau with numerous small villages around the village of Saiq. The valley near Saiq is only partially cultivated. But in some parts the farmers are still active and continue the traditional agriculture on the terraces.
The rural population of Oman is increasingly drawn to the big cities like Muscat, Nizwa or Sohar. The result is almost deserted villages and fallow fields..
On the plateau of Saiq, the climate in the high altitudes is almost Mediterranean. On spectacular terraces, huge pomegranates, grapes, walnuts and the famous Damascene roses thrive in the middle of the mountains. Their rose water supplies the whole Orient.
