The Shwedagon, also Shwedagon-Paya is the most important sacred building and the religious center of Myanmar in Yangon.
The legend says that the Shwedagon Pagoda is more than 2500 years old. Records of Buddhist monks testify that the pagoda was built before the death of the historical Buddha Siddhartha Gautama in 486 BC.
The golden decoration of the pagoda is now estimated at a weight of 60 tons.
It is considered the landmark of the whole country and is one of the most famous stupas in the world. The almost 100 meter high pagoda is enthroned on a hill and shines over the former capital. | Myanmar
A beautiful series of photos on this very ornate pagoda and its great history!
60 tons is a lot …
And it’s surprising that, being at the mercy of natural elements, such as rain and humidity, it’s perfectly well maintained.
