Fearful Men

The burqa, a full-body veil worn by many women in Afghanistan, is a symbol of oppression and restriction of women's rights. But it is also a reflection of men's fears.

In a patriarchal society, where the honor of the family is closely linked to the control of women, the burqa is often seen as a protective shield. It is supposed to protect women from the gaze of strange men and thus from potential "shame". This idea of "shame" is closely linked to the Islamic doctrine of the "aura," which dictates that women must cover their bodies from strange men. The burqa is often considered the most comprehensive and "correct" type of veiling, although there are different interpretations of which parts of the body exactly need to be covered. One of many interpretations, there are also far more liberal views in the Islamic world.

However, the burqa also conceals men's fears of losing control. The burqa becomes an instrument to make women invisible and thus subordinate them to male dominance. It symbolises the fear of female autonomy and the fear of a society in which women have equal rights.

The burqa is therefore not just a piece of fabric, but a complex web of tradition, religion, social norms and individual fear. It symbolises the oppression of women, but also the fears of men who could lose their traditional roles in a changing world.

It is important to emphasise that these fears do not affect all men in Afghanistan and that there are also men who stand up for women's rights. Nevertheless, they are an important factor when considering the burqa and its role in Afghan society.

Afghanistan Today

The Taliban have a very strict and fundamentalist interpretation of Islam, which focuses heavily on the oppression of women. Since their return to power in Afghanistan in August 2021, they have taken a number of measures to massively restrict women's rights, some of which are inhumane.

Regarding the burqa, the Taliban have made it clear that they consider it a mandatory dress code for women in public. In May 2022, they even issued a decree requiring all women over the age of 14 to wear the burqa in Afghanistan. This is a sign of how important the burqa is to the Taliban as a symbol of their ideology and how they are trying to push women out of the public eye.

It is important to understand that the Taliban consider the burqa not only as a religious precept, but also as an instrument of social control. They use the burqa to isolate women, restrict their freedom of movement and reduce their visibility in society. This serves to consolidate the patriarchal structures that the Taliban want to maintain.
