Riads have no exterior windows on the lower floors and are fully inward-facing. This keeps the heat, dust and noise out of the city while maintaining the privacy of residents – something that was particularly important for the Muslim women who once lived there.

Traditionally, the garden included citrus trees and a central fountain, although some modern riads have replaced it with a courtyard or plunge pool. | Morocco
