The Watch over the Sea

After a steep climb, the reward awaits: high above Nafplio stands the Palamidi Fortress, a Venetian stronghold dating back to the early 18th century. Strategically located on a 216-metre-high hill, it once offered protection from invaders and later even served as a prison, among others for the freedom fighter Theodoros Kolokotronis.

The climb over around 1,000 steep steps is sweaty, but is rewarded with a spectacular view of the city and the sea. Today Palamidi is one of the most impressive fortresses in Greece-a must for every Naflio visitor. | Greece
