Towards the heavens, escaping gravity
Off to the Salang Pass! Here we see a classic Afghan ‘logistics artist’ in his natural habitat – probably the most spectacular mountain road between Kabul and Kunduz.
This moving skyscraper defies not only gravity, but also the notorious switchbacks of the Salang Pass, where even vehicles with normal loads struggle. While other drivers ponder snow chains and winter tyres, this driver has apparently decided to navigate his own mobile warehouse through 3,878 metres of altitude.
The artfully layered cargo seems to be an ambitious experiment: ‘What happens when you pack an entire village onto a lorry and drive through the Afghan mountains?’ The answer: it works, as long as you have enough tension straps and faith in God.
It is particularly remarkable that this rolling Jenga tower probably transports more goods than many freight trains – and all this on a road that is challenging even for normal vehicles. A true triumph of the ‘nothing is impossible’ principle in Afghan transport!

Was bedeuten sie ?
Ja – die aufgemalten Augen auf der Rückwand des Transporters haben tatsächlich eine Bedeutung.
Solche Verzierungen sind typisch für Truck Art, eine weitverbreitete Tradition in Ländern wie Pakistan, Afghanistan, Indien und auch Teilen des Nahen Ostens. Die Augen werden oft aus folgenden Gründen aufgemalt:
Schutzsymbol: Man glaubt, dass Augen böse Geister oder den „bösen Blick“ (das „Nazar“) abwehren können. Sie sollen also Glück bringen und den Fahrer und die Fracht schützen.
Wachsamkeit: Augen stehen auch symbolisch für Aufmerksamkeit – sozusagen als „Augen, die auf der Straße wachen“.
Dekoration & Stolz: Neben der symbolischen Funktion ist Truck Art generell ein Ausdruck von Stolz des Fahrers/Besitzers und dient dazu, das Fahrzeug unverwechselbar zu machen.
