Nearly a quarter of a century of civil war have left the afghan educational system in ruins. Despite intensive efforts by the international community it remains a big challenge to offer afghan children good education, especially in the rural areas. Eight years after the fall of the Taliban regime wide areas of the country are still without adequate educational facilities. The Afghan government does not have the resources to carry out the comprehensive reconstruction work needed.
The "Initiative Afghanistan” is a non-governmental volontary project with the agenda to help the afghan society with the reconstruction of the desolate educational infrastructure in order to supply a foundation for a peaceful future of the country. Education is an elementary right and should be accessible to all humans.
“Initiative Afghanistan e. V.” is organizing the rebuilding of a girl school in the county of Kunduz. The members of the association Susanne and Omar Sayami have worked in different educational projects in Kabul and Kunduz. They are German-Afghans and spent their childhood in Afghanistan.
The initiative Schools for Afghanistan (Initiative Afghanistan e.V.) is building a second school house in Char Gul, a rural township in the north of Kunduz accommodating the primary and grammar school. Both schools together will give one thousand children and 20 teachers a roof over the head. In winter 2006 the construction of the second school building started. The school will be completely equipped with furniture. In medium-term also aspects of teacher-training and contents of the course of instruction will be develloped and adequate teaching and learning aids will be provided.
Of about 280 state-approved schools in the county of Kunduz approximately 80 possess a school building, while the others have to give the lessons outdoors. There is neither appropriate teaching material nor are the teachers on an up-to-date educational background. Due to the lack of schoolrooms, teachers and learning aids, often the children are not sent to school at all.
For instance, in the catchment area of the Char Gul school there are 25,000 to 30,000 people living about 20 villages making a living mainly from cultivation of wheat. Thus, in the Char Gul Tepa girlschool, a primary and grammar school, 8 classes are currently educated on a former paddy field under the shadow straw mats. The curriculum comprises subjects like Dari, Pashtu, English, mathematics, geography, and history.
The "Initiative Afghanistan” needs financial support in order to errect the school building in Char Gul. No administrative costs incur: 100% of the donations will be invested into the project.
