Dreaming Pagodas

Sunset in Old Bagan: From the 10th to the 13th century, 10,000 magnificent pagodas and monasteries were built on an area of 42 square kilometers.

They were built by the Pyu and Mon. At the end of the 12th century, the Mongols invaded Bagan under the rule of Kublai Khan. Although they did not destroy anything, as they were Buddhists themselves, Bagan was abandoned afterwards. The wooden houses and palaces in which the builders of the pagodas lived have long since disappeared. Many pagodas were destroyed by earthquakes. Today, about 2500 pagodas remain, some of them beautiful. | Myanmar
